Food webs, classification and biodiversity

Additional primary activities to accompany the Gould League Food webs, classification and biodiversity kit.

 

The Food Web News

Level 2,3 & 4

Curriculum Area -Science and SOSE

Outcomes

Students:

  • produce a class newspaper including articles, advertisements, crosswords, drawings and photographs on the theme of food chains, habitats, ecosystems.
  • investigate and write about individual animals presented in this book.

 

Materials and preparation

 

Animal cut-outs and species information, access to research material, access to the Internet, paper, pens, drawing materials.

Method

 

Divide the class into three groups. Each group could develop a community newspaper or newsletter for either the Australian, Antarctic or African ecosystem.

The newsletters could include articles (stories or factual information), poetry, advertisements, puzzles, drawings and photographs on the different themes in this book such as food chains, food webs, animal adaptations, classification, diet, habitats etc.

Extension

  • Students could look in magazines and newspapers for articles connected with the themes or animals discussed in this book.
  • Material presented in the Food Web news" could be incorporated into a school magazine.
  • Instead of producing a community newsletter, students could produce wildlife tour guides for one of three ecosystems. Information such as location, weather, travel arrangements, itinerary and information on the animals that will be seen during a visit to either Australia, Africa or Antarctica could be included in the brochure.
