Food webs, classification and biodiversity

Additional primary activities to accompany the Gould League Food webs, classification and biodiversity kit.

Hollow Hilton

Level 2 and 3
Curriculum Area: Science and English

Outcomes

Students:

  • identify that animals depend on their environment for survival
  • describe the relationships between living things
  • explain findings in writing and by using drawings

Materials and preparation

Whiteboard, marker, sheets of paper for students to draw on, textas or pencils, access to information sources, African and Australian picture cut-outs and species information from the Gould League Food webs, Classification and Biodiversity kit.

Method

Use the African and Australian food web pictures and information from the kit to investigate a relationship between two different types of living things. In small groups the students find out about the relationship between the two types of creatures.

Eg African Acacia (thorn trees) and ants:
"Ant-sized guard dogs"

  • Long spikes on the thorn trees protect the tree from grazing animals
  • Ants that live on the tree also protect the tree from grazing animals

Eg Gum tree and galah: "Hollow Hilton"

  • ermites eat the middle of an old tree
  • Galahs nest in the hollow, chicks are kept warm, dry and protected from predators
Students write a story about the special relationship that exists between two different types of living things that includes information such as:
It eats me I eat it
I live in/on it It lives in/on me
I hide in it It hides in/on me

Draw a story board with three panels to illustrate the stories.

Eg Tree with ants nest
Giraffe comes to the tree to eat the leaves
Ants sting giraffe; giraffe goes away
Eg Tree with termites or a branch breaks off
Galah finds hollow
Tree protects chicks from weather, fox, hawk

Other relationships to investigate and write about could include:

Flight to the death peregrine falcon and galah
The race for survival emu and dingo
Poo! Elephant and dung beetle
Sticking with the mob wildebeest and lion

Extension

Students role play their stories for an audience.
