Curriculum Area - Science

Outcomes

Students:

  • Identify features of animals that enable survival in particular environments.
  • Group animals on the basis of their similarities.
  • Compare and contrast features of groups of animals.

Materials and preparation

Selected cut-outs (see below) displayed on a whiteboard.

Method

Show the pictures of the dingo, killer whale, seal, kangaroo, zebra and lion in a jumbled arrangement. As a class or in small groups generate a list of things that enable these animals to live where they live.

Discuss: What similarities are there between any of the animals? Can any be grouped together? Why are there differences between animals that can be grouped together?
