In the scheme of things

Level: 5
Curriculum Area: Science

Outcomes

Students:

  • Use a variety of reference materials
  • Identify niches of various animals

Materials and preparation

Animal cut outs from the Gould League's Food Webs, Classification and Biodiversity activity books displayed as a food web on a white board, access to research information such as books, natural history or dictionaries of biology, paper, pens

Method

Display one of the food webs on the whiteboard. Select a few animals and guide a class discussion on the requirements of each animal and how their requirements determine where they are found and their position and role in the food web ie. Niche

Students work in pairs to establish a definition for the word 'niche' and then pool the individual definitions to come up with a class definition. Compare the class definition with those in dictionaries and modify the class definition if necessary.

Each student selects an animal and uses the reference tools available to identify their animals' niche. From the research information, students prepare a quiz - Who am I? to present to the rest of the class.
