Plants living along the coast have to be hardy to handle the harsh conditions of the sun, wind and salt. These plants have a special role, holding the sand and soil together, preventing the sand dunes from blowing away and providing food and shelter for native wildlife. They may be have specially designed leaves which reflect the sun, can store water or tolerate high levels of salt.
